St. Michael's Cascade

Saint Michael's Cascade is in reference to a story about the Archangel Michael. This legend has been a source of spiritual connection and pilgrimages for centuries.  Locally, the cascade is called "San Miguel" because the archangel was tasked with stopping the devil from coming out of the Pailón, up the river, and into the town of Rio Verde.

Volcanic activity from the nearby stratovolcano Tungurahua, has left a visible mark on the landscape, including the presence of large deposits of black volcanic rock throughout the region. Over the years, water has carved its path through the volcanic rock to form the San Miguel waterfall.  Standing at an impressive 18 meters tall, this stunning waterfall creates a mesmerizing whirlpool in the hollowed lagoon below.

The Dwarf's Lagoon

Since time immemorial, certain waterways and hollowed lagoons  are considered  to be entrances to other dimensions. According to legend, curious forest elves exist just outside of this world; their habitats are near the waterfalls and ravines of different rivers.
