The rural parish of the Baños canton is located in the province of Tungurahua - from Quichua tunguri (throat) and rahua (fire) meaning "Throat of Fire" - name for the active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes. Its geographical jurisdiction includes several rivers and streams that converge from the mysterious Llanganates mountain range.

This area contains 195 species of plants endemic to the Pastaza basin,

of which 91 are orchids.

A total of 242 bird species belonging to 42 different families are present,

of which 5 are endemic and 3 are threatened.
