A Remote History

Although Río Verde was officially created on September 11, 1961 -

its history dates back to pre-Columbian times, when it was inhabited by the Huancavilca and Chachi indigenous cultures. These communities had a deep connection with the rivers and the surrounding rainforest, and their cultural legacy remains an integral part of Río Verde's identity.

Río Verde also has historical relevance, since it was a refuge and settlement for the Spanish during the colonial era. The current parish of Río Verde was a resting place for those traveling to the east in search of such coveted treasures as cinnamon and gold.
